How to enable inheritance

Inheritance of permissions

In Windows, many files and folders will not have their access permissions set directly. Instead, they will be set to inherit these permissions from their parent folder. This way, any time a new file or folder is created, it will automatically be given the correct access permissions depending on where it is being created. This makes it much easier for a user to ensure that the access permissions of files and folders on their system will be correct; indeed, most users never need to worry about the access permissions of the files and folders on their computers at all, since they very rarely are set incorrectly.

Sometimes, users of Déjà Vu will find that they are experiencing problems that can be traced to a folder having access permissions set incorrectly, and sometimes it turns that the cause of this is that the folder in questions is not inheriting access permissions from its parent folder. In these cases enabling inheritance on the affected folder will set the access permissions correctly, and ensure that the access permissions will stay set correctly.

How to enable inheritance of access permissions

  1. Open the Security dialog for the folder that you want to enable inheritance on.
  2. Click Advanced.
  3. The Advanced Security Settings dialog opens:
  4. Click Enable Inheritance. If this button is not available, that means that Inheritance is already enabled.
  5. A Windows Security dialog appears showing what files and folders the new configuration is being applied to.
  6. It is possible that you will see a warning:

This means that the configuration could not be applied to that particular file for some reason (often, because the file is already in use). Most of the time, you can click Continue and just ignore the message. Depending on how many items the folder you are working on contains, you may need to click away many of these warnings.
  7. Click OK.
